Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre is one of the most famous love stories in English literature. Now the BGT is bringing a brand-new adaptation to the stage, to be premiered in Luxembourg.
The orphan Jane Eyre, plain but passionate, escapes the cold charity of Lowood school to become governess to a young French girl at Thornfield Hall. There she falls in love with her
employer, the forbidding Mr. Rochester. But this is a love that seems doomed by the distance of class. and by a dark secret hidden at Thornfield. The discovery of this secret threatens to destroy both Jane and Rochester and she is thrown into the world to survive on her own courage and resourcefulness.
First published in 1847, Jane Eyre is not only a great love story but is also a surprisingly modern presentation of the clash between desire and duty and of the striving for female independence and equality. Jane is arguably one of the first genuinely feminist heroines and her struggle to find both true love and true respect as a woman is as relevant today as it was 160 years ago.
The Berliner Grundtheater e.V. (BGT) was founded in 1991 and is dedicated to producing a wide a range of English-language plays. As well as playing in Berlin, the company has appeared in Luxembourg, at the Edinburgh Festival and at Anglo-Deutsch Festivals around Germany. The BGT has played several times in Luxembourg, most recently in 2009 with a production of Agatha Christie's Verdict at the Abbaye de Neumünster.
